   UPCOMING ACTION EVENTS:

National Week against criminalization!

(part of Alto Arizona's Summer of Human Rights.)

STOP SB 1070! STOP 287g! STOP Arpaio!

From Selma to Phoenix, From Civil Rights to Human Rights, and the Rights of Mother Earth!

non-compliance flyerResistance has sparked across the state of Arizona and the country to defeat SB1070 and all racist policies that further criminalize our people and separate families. We know that if SB1070 is not stopped in Arizona now, similar laws will spread throughout the country.

We demand that the Obama Administration take decisive action and not comply with Arizona’s SB1070. This law can only terrorize our communities if the federal government cooperates with it.

We demand that all ICE ACCESS programs such as 287(g), Secure Communities, and the CAP programs be suspended.

We demand Arizona institutions such as Cities, Towns, Police Jurisdictions, Universities, Colleges, K-12 Schools, School Districts and Businesses to publically state that they will not comply and will not cooperate with SB1070.

We call on people from around the country to come to Phoenix and stand in solidarity with the communities of Arizona to stop the implementation of SB1070!

We call that all those in that cannot come to Arizona have solidarity actions in their home communities.

July 29th 2010 Don’t Work! Don’t buy! Don’t comply! ACTIONS!

APRIL 2010:

Uncovering the Truth:
A Week of Coordinated Events and Advocacy on Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Police Collaboration Visit www.UncovertheTruth.org for updates on local events and actions and multimedia.

On April 27 national and local immigrant rights, criminal justice and social justice groups throughout the country will kick off a week of actions aimed at "Uncovering the Truth on Police and ICE Collaboration."

Deportation programs like the Department of Homeland Security’s misnamed "Secure Communities" program are set to be in every U.S jail by 2013 without the public, elected officials, and sometimes police chiefs themselves knowing. Indeed, the program has been advanced in secrecy despite significant public attention paid to the devastating consequences to communities where police enforcement of immigration law has been piloted.

The "Uncovering the Truth" week of activities is intended to be a coordinated effort to get local groups asking questions about police and ICE collaboration in their communities, and to get lawmakers in Congress focused on holding the Department of Homeland Security accountable.

Please join us to discuss plans for a week of coordinated local and national events, that include a large federal Freedom of Information Act request on the "Secure Communities" program, press conferences, community forums, release of reports, vigils at detention centers, audio testimonials, and initial meetings with local officials.

Together, we will gather the information necessary to make informed decisions about policies affecting our communities and the country to take further action before it’s too late.

May 1st Convergence/Community Assembly
Tell Obama to stop this racist attack on our state: Obama STOP SB 1070!
Join PUENTE for convergence and community assembly, discuss strategy and share ideas for building a long-term movement for Arizona’s families.
When: May 1st

Why: Organizers of the May 1 rally in Phoenix are calling for President Obama to intervene in Arizona and issue an executive order asserting the federal governments exclusive control over immigration law, and overturn what many across the country are claiming is a racist law that codifies racial profiling.

Last week’s passage of SB 1070 by Governor Brewer sparked national outrage catalyzing a movement for immigrant rights and lending a sense of urgency to national immigrant rights mobilizations planned for May 1. We are planning a rally in Phoenix on that same day as rallies across the county.

“People from across Arizona, immigrants and non-immigrants, are standing up against the passage of the racist SB 1070,” said Salvador Reza of Puente, a human rights organization calling for a rally on May 1 in Phoenix. “We aren’t just calling for overturning SB 1070, we want to change immigration policy completely so that it reflects the values this country was built on, freedom and fairness for all people.”

Peace March and Community Gathering

Douglas, AZ
Contact: Del Cabarga at dcabarga@aol.com or (520) 236-4675

10 a.m. - Southwest corner of Pan American and 5th Street, Douglas, Arizona

Douglas For Just Immigration Reform—SB1070 is a non-partisan grass roots organization of Douglas area residents formed to support just immigration reform and protest the recent Arizona immigration law, SB1070, as well as the follow-up law, HB 2162 The group will be holding a peaceful march and rally on Saturday, May 15, at 10 a.m. The seven block march will begin at the corner of Pan American Avenue and 5th Street finishing with a rally at the park one block north of the port of entry at Pan American and Customs Ave. The rally will include informed speakers, music, vendors and information on the group and its purpose.

Douglas for Just Immigration Reform—Stop SB1070 wants the following things:

  • An Immediate Repeal of or Injunction to Stop SB1070
  • Respect for the dignity of all persons regardless of ethnicity, language, or socio-economic status: SB 1070 and HB2162 invite racial profiling that does not respect the dignity of all persons and opens the door for civil rights abuses; they create derision, suspicion and division within the community making it harder to work on true immigration reform;
  • Safe communities: SB 1070 and HB 2162 will require local police to use resources to check documentation of persons who are law-abiding, contributing members to our community instead of using all of their resources to apprehend persons who are harming our communities through felony activities;
  • Relationship of trust between our community and our local law enforcement: SB 1070 and HB2162 erode trust and make community policing more difficult;
  • Positive bi-national relationships that provide for mutually beneficial cultural, intellectual and economic exchange: SB 1070 and HB2162 increase fear and damage the US relationship with Agua Prieta, Sonora and all of Mexico;
  • A community where we can “love our neighbors as ourselves” without risking arrest: SB 1070 and HB2162 would potentially lead to the arrest of family members, friends and other “Good Samaritans” who provide shelter to those in need;
  • Real immigration reform that provides for a way for our country to live up to its strength of being a nation of immigrants: SB 1070 and HB2162 does not address the root causes of our failed immigration system but rather scapegoats an entire class of people.

The Cochise County Democratic Party is a sponsor of the event. The group is open to receiving sponsorship from any organization which is in agreement with its core values regardless of political affiliation.

Uncover the Truth Teach-In Call

Please join us on:
Monday May 17th from 2:00 pm EST- 3:30 pm EST

Learn some first steps local communities can take to oppose the staggering growth of police-ICE partnerships that are led to the civil rights crisis in Arizona.

The teach-in is part of the national “Uncovering the Truth Behind Police and ICE Collaboration” campaign. The teach-in will empower local communities new to the issues to gain information and generate a public discourse about programs that threaten public safety, systemize racial profiling, and destroy communities. Currently, these programs are being implemented at breakneck speed with little public information or government oversight. As one example, ICE plans to implement Secure Communities in all jails by 2013.

The teach-in is designed for local groups and community members from diverse fields—including immigration, criminal justice, labor, faith, and domestic violence groups—interested in challenging the current or imminent threat of police-ICE partnerships in their community. The call is not open to government or media representatives.

This teach-in will primarily guide participants through a toolkit developed by The National Immigration Project of the National Lawyers Guild, the National Immigration Law Center, and National Day Laborer Organizing Network that incorporates valuable advice and resources to help communities gather information and uncover the truth.

To register go to: http://uncoverthetruth.org/uncover-the-truth-teach-in-may-17th

REGISTRATION DEADLINE: May 13 at 7pm EST – Space is limited!!
Registrants will be sent call-in information on May 14th.
